Yellow and Gray Inspiration

I love the combination of yellow and gray. Do you? When I paint, I love to use all kinds of bright colors - aquas, pinks, oranges. But, I also really like to pair a bright (or even in the pastel version of the color) with a more muted color like gray. I think the contrast is really pretty.

While I was wondering the aisles of Michaels (I know, I know, I have a problem. Ha!) I found some fabulous scrapbook paper by My Mind's Eye. It was in a little 6x6 paper pad which I love. That size works really well for background paper. The patterns are shrunk down compared to a 12x12 sheet, so the small size looks great on the canvases or journal pages I work on. The colors in this pad were a perfect jumping off point. Sometimes paper is all you need for a little inspiration. LOVE. L.O.V.E.

So with this My Mind's Eye paper as my inspiration, I used an old wood block that I had laying around and started to cover it up with the pretty paper. I have quite a few of these blocks laying around. I did stock up around the holidays (sales + gift cards = happy camper) with canvases, but wood is my favorite. It is super cost effective to go to a home improvement store and have some wood cut down to the size you prefer. Well, or have a very handy hubby cut the wood for you. :)

After attaching my papers with Mod Podge, I threw on a layer of gesso. Then hunted through my stash of paint to find my pretty yellows and grays (pictured above - so yummy! Right?). Besides the color choices, I planned on just letting the piece come to me. No real thought as to what I wanted to paint - just the colors.

From the background I began to see a face emerge, then a headband with a feather (I have seen a lot of feathers lately) and then the words...be brave in truth. Right? I love that saying. I love the word brave. There are so many degrees of bravery aren't there? But, I know for me...speaking truth and trying to be true to who I am & my tender, sensitive heart takes a bit of courage.

Here she is all finished and just waiting for a varnish bath. After that she will be on her way into my shop. :)

What color combinations are inspiring you lately?

New Jewelry and a Sale

Hi friends!

I hope you had a beautiful Thanksgiving (in the states). Our celebration was wonderful! My hubby and daughter have had the whole week off which is the best for me. :) On Wednesday night, we were able to spend the evening with my in-laws and nephew at Disneyland. It is always magical there...but, especially during Christmas. We watched the castle lighting (special decorations for the holiday season) and danced around Main Street as it "snowed." Such a perfect night before Thanksgiving.

We hosted Thanksgiving dinner this year and I am one lucky girl. My husband does all the cooking!! How fab is that!? He is a fantastic chef too, so we all have full bellies by the night's end. :)

Yorkshire Pudding comes once a year.
Also, I have been working on my shop for Cyber Monday. I have a few new items that I have been putting my heart and soul into. I currently have everything in my store 25% off through Sunday. Just enter coupon code BLACKFRIDAY25. One of a kind pendant necklaces are making their way into the shop. They really are unique little pieces of wearable art. No one necklace is the same. :) LOVE that!

Ornaments too!

Don't forget that my Whimsy Christmas Workshop is also coming next Saturday, December 1st!! I still have some seats available. Soooo, if you are in southern California come join us. It will be a fun afternoon of festive art making. More information on my Workshop page. Just hit the tab above!

Have beautiful rest of the weekend.
We are knee deep in Christmas decorations over here!
How about you?

New Original Art - Faithful

I have been working on a lot of new original pieces this week. I guess you could say I am on "artistic fire" or that my creative mojo is on fire. ;) So many fun little projects all at once. Some pieces are headed to my shop, while others are coming with me...somewhere special...somewhere super exciting...BUT, I am going to tell you about that later. Hee hee! I always like a little suspense. More to come later. Look at this sweet new original angel...I love her.

She is a definate favorite for me. She is painted on a wood panel that is about 8 x 4.5 inches. I started out covering the wood with some vintage Christmas sheet music that was literally falling apart. This one was "O Come All Ye Faithful." I love the bits of music showing through and the words that I circled.  The sheets of music actually came from my childhood piano music. The red you see came from scribbled crayon. I think my sister or I must have been the culprits. ;)

I knew I wanted really transparent layers. So after a bit of gesso - I lightly added acrylic paint in Hauser Light Green, Spa Blue, Sea Glass, and white by scraping it on with an old credit card. Her wings have a Pearlizing Medium (Americana) applied over the white which make her wings shimmer. Squeal! So pretty, but hard to see in the pictures.

It is true that if you paint, paint, paint...and then paint some more - a "style" starts to emerge. I am starting to see a common thread weaving it's way through the whimsy girls I paint, the flowers that keep popping up (even in fall), certain colors continually, and a level of comfort. Not like a boring "comfortable" where nothing is tried or things remain the same...but a comfort with myself and what I do that make trying new things second nature. I hope that makes sense!

I also painted another canvas of a whimsy Christmas tree that I will share in another post. I loved painting these so much that I ran out to get more of these little wooden panels (the packaging calls them "trays"). I could only find two. Boo hoo! So I am on the hunt for more.

Are you in a "Christmas-y" kinda mood yet?
Can you believe it's November 6th??

Yiiipppee!
It's Monday!!
It's Sadie Lane Studio Re-launch Monday!
...And my eyeballs feel like they want to fall out of my head. Lol!

I have been in front of this computer screen for way too long. I LOVE creating. I adore taking pictures. I get giddy with all kinds of creating ideas. I devour all the inspiration on your blogs. But, all the editing of pictures, uploading, typing descriptions, business stuff, etc...not my favorite! ;) Now, with that "whoa is me" tantrum out of the way...the shop is filling up with all kinds of fun things. So many more things will be added throughout the week too!
Yay ...Yee-Haw...Whoot..and a pom pom stag jump (cheerleader style)!

Just a few things I have been working on and listing in the shop.

There is a lot more. But, before my eyeballs land on the floor, I must get to the fun stuff! To mark the beginning (well, the real beginning) of my Etsy store, all week I will be running a sale.

Just enter the coupon code HAPPYSADIE15 for 15% discount!
Oh Happy Day! :)

Be on the look out for more items to hit the shop this week, plus PRINTS are in the works, and so are some one of a kind necklaces! I will keep you posted on all that. Picking up eyeballs and heading to bed! :)

Current Obsession - ATC Girls

ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) are so fun to make and painting fun little whimsy girls on them is even better. I am addicted. I have been painting these little beauties for the shop (which I will start stocking tomorrow...yippee! I only have 4 things listed right now, so they are very lonely. Lol) and can not stop. :) Kinda like when you eat M&Ms.... you know how you can't just stop at one.
It is exactly like that.

I gesso a bunch at one time and let them dry. Then I create the first layer with my watercolors and water brush. The ATCs are the perfect size to take with me to the couch when I watch TV at night. I usually bring my pencil with me and sketch the face too. I love how quickly watercolor dries. It really makes them perfect for a first background layer. After I have several cards done I have been giving them a quick spray with fixative. When the portraits are this small, I don't like the graphite to move around on me.

The following day I will finish them up in the studio with acrylic paint, pens, stamps, stencils, etc and finally some words. Super fun! I guess I should be calling them ACEOs since they are heading to the store. I did a little research and found out that when ATCs are going to be sold instead of traded they are referred to as ACEOs or Art Cards, Editions, and Originals.
Either way, I love them!

I hope you come visit on Monday to see all the new things I have been working on for Sadie Lane Studio, but until then you must come join the Party. I am late...but, I can't help it - I must go Party! :)

Smiles,

Hello Tuesday & Printer Questions

 Happy Tuesday Friends!
I hope your week is starting off well. It is a beautiful cloudy morning here. After the crazy heat we have had lately, I am loving the gloom. There a little fall chill in the air and I am tempted to dust off my boots. :) Since my daughter is at school and my youngest is at Grandma's house today - I am hoping to get LOTS of painting done. Besides a doctor's appointment (Dread. Boo. Hiss) the rest of the day is dedicated to studio stuff. Yiippeee!!

My studio desk looks pretty colorful too. Current obsessions : Americana craft paints in Indian Turquoise, Pineapple, Butterscotch, Spa Blue,
and Carousel Pink. Swoon!

I also found some circular wood panels (not very thick) that I LOVE.
The shape of it is so super fun.

You Are Sunshine - WIP

So, here is what I am wondering, if you are making prints of your work - Do you print yourself? Which printer do you use?
Do you have them printed by someone else? Online?
Your input is greatly appreciated! :)

Have a Beautiful Day!

Aqua & Orange

with a bit of yellow and pink is my new color combo obsession.
It is so bright and cheery. It just makes me smile.

I painted these two the other day, while cleaning out my studio. Holy Cow! This was MUCH needed!. I was sorting, moving things around, separating, organizing, painting (preparing for the re-opening!), washing, tossing, running to the table for more painting, discovering forgotten items , dancing (sometimes I can't help myself), hanging things, and getting things done!
It felt so good to get the studio clean.

This one was painted on a 6 x 6 cradled wood panel. I adore painting on wood. Plus, I love painting things that are ready to hang. So these are perfect! BTW, where do you get your panels if you paint on wood? I had the background painted a while back and it had just been sitting there waiting for me to finish it. It is all paint. I didn't use any paper except for the words. I used a Gelly Roll, black Pentel pen and some Faber-Castell pens for the details. Now she is ready for some varnish and a photo shoot. She (total female this one - see those colors! Ha!) will be headed to the shop very soon.

Loving happy colors!

This little scrumptious cutie is a 4x4 canvas panel. The flower on the right side is from the collage sheets I made the other day. So fun! I also really like using motivational quotes, words, or saying in the pieces I create. Just positive reminders that we all need. I know I do! She will be making her debut in the shop on the 22nd. :)))

What colors are making you happy?

Oh, and don't forget...

Obsessed with the Little Ones

Are you thinking that I am talking about my little ones?
I am totally obsessed with these two darling faces...

But, I am really talking about these little heart breakers.

Many of my lovely bloggy friends said that mini canvases had chocolate...
or let's say a crack-like effect.

It's true. Maybe it's their itty bitty cuteness or the ease of finishing them due to the size. All I know is that I am smitten. :) I am putting each one in my shop in hopes of spreading love and raising money for Love146. (I am writing more about that tomorrow.)

Other things on my obsession (To Do) list...
  • Journal pages - working on finishing my current art journal so I can dive into the Visual Journal my hubby got me for Christmas. Any one have this journal? Thoughts?
  • Catching up in Life Book - I know, a month in & I am "behind." (No worries - I have a year to catch up!)
  • Working on some larger pieces for family
  • More blog sprucing and shop cleaning
  • Birthday party planning (Both kiddies have birthdays coming!)
  • Photo editing & organizing - What an undertaking!
  • My son's Potty Training. Need I say more? Pray for patience! ;)
Journal page in the works
 What are your latest obsessions??

Little 4X4 Canvases

4x4 Canvas - just getting started

I saw some of these little cuties at Michaels and just couldn't pass them up.
How adorable, right?
Little 4X4 canvases... too cute.

I brought them home thinking they would be super fun additions to my shop.
Small originals that wouldn't take too long to complete and reasonably priced.

I started thinking about Valentine's Day and February too.
So much LOVE in February.
Not just Valentine's Day, but my anniversary the day before,
my son's birthday, and
my mother in law's too -
lots of celebrating.

I started to think that making a series of love inspired mini canvases
would be a perfect theme.
The attributes of love....perfect!

I started with 1 Corinthians 13 for inspiration.

Love is a beautiful thing.
Real love...unselfish love...the way it was designed.

I am having a great time getting started on my wee little pieces of art.
I will list them in my shop soon!

I am joining all the creativity at Paint Party Friday and Studio Sneak Peek!
Have a loved filled weekend. :)
